Signinum has completed the conservation and restoration work on the portico of the Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais in Tomar. The monument is now ready to welcome worshippers and visitors in all its splendour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We recall that the intervention aimed to slow down the degradation in the portico area. To this end, it was necessary to proceed with the cleaning and removal of dirt and biological activity, consolidation of the stone support, fixing of elements at risk of detachment and some already detached, filling of volumetric gaps that interfered with the stability of the whole, treatment of joints, treatment of metal elements and final protection.

The current Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais began to be built in the middle of the 13th century, becoming an emblematic work of Portuguese Gothic architecture. Its model was replicated in several churches from the north to the south of Portugal.
It was built on the same site where D. Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Temple, built a primitive temple in the 12th century to serve as the pantheon of the Order's masters. The tombstone of Gualdim Pais, dating from 1195, remains from this period, inserted in one of the interior walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was given the honour of cathedral and diocese by two bulls, one from Pope Nicholas V (1454) and the other from Pope Callistus III (13th of March, 1455).
Over the years it has undergone various interventions, ending up with the appearance we see today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was listed as a national monument in 1910. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
