The removal of repainting from a painting on wood in the Chapel of Santa Ana, in Ribeirão, Famalicão, confirmed what the team from Signinum team had suspected from the outset: an older representation was hidden there, which was finally revealed.
The piece was found when the chapel's main altarpiece was dismantled, but it concealed this representation of souls in Purgatory, which was very common in side altarpieces in churches in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The origins of the Chapel of Santa Ana date back to the 16th century. In 1873, the temple was rebuilt, acquiring its current appearance. The main façade is covered with tiles from the 19th and 20th centuries.
