A landmark of the city of Braga, the Bom Jesus do Monte religious complex dates back to the 14th century, when the first pilgrims were recorded as visiting this sacred hill. It gained prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries and, by the 19th century, had become Portugal’s largest religious site.
In 2019, the architectural, scenic and spiritual significance of Bom Jesus do Monte led to its recognition by UNESCO as an World Heritage Site, in the category of Cultural Landscape.
The restoration of the basilica, carried out by Signinum between 2017 and 2019, contributed significantly to this designation. The conservation and restoration work covered the entire building and its artistic heritage, with the team preserving the originality of the artefacts as much as possible.
The project also included the installation of a real-time monitoring system for temperature and relative humidity to control degradation processes, as well as new systems for lighting, fire detection and CCTV.
